Tamara Forrest-Smith
We’d all like to have lots of cash in bank, and if having a Facebook account and Tweeting “strawberry blond colour” was all salons needed to have that cash in the bank, we’d all be using just social media to run our businesses, would not we? According to statistics monarchy brings £176M to the UK treasury every year (not including the money made by restaurants, hotels, cabs and stores)… with that in mind, and with no whether to support, I could not help but wonder how would UK tourism department go about attracting tourism, if the UK was not the country of queens and late kings. Whenever I got direct mail in the salons I would go through each piece very carefully, open or trash the ones I wasn’t sure about rather than waste time opening, reading and then trashing. This one was a simple, plain, cheap white envelope with a dot-matrix label that said The Owner rather than my name. I was curious so I opened it. The letter was from a car company I knew off and were very ...
Ask a Real Salon Expert?
Tamara Forrest-Smith
In 1989 when I opened my first high street hair salon and business I had to do certain things that I wasn’t sure about doing. I could have kept a job but frankly as a creative I had quickly become an unemployable dreamer that just wanted to create great things. So I got a shop. I had to sign a long contract that would keep me committed and in the shop for 15 years. I had to re-mortgage my home to make the shop happen. I had to work 7 days a week for years. I had to be a director, accountant, boss, listener, mentor, trainer and a hairdresser each day. The stress was huge and there was more than one occasion where ...
