Looking back it was crazy. From staff walkouts to striking staff. From no clients to far too many clients. To a stack of money in the bank to county court bailiffs wanting to take everything. And from an opening day disaster to a number one salon. Like I say it was 20 years of everything.

I Went From Being a Salon Failure to Having The Number One Hair Salon in a Town of Over 35 Hair Salons.

  • We couldn't fit in all of our clients
  • We did more colour than any salon I knew
  • We sold truckloads of retail
  • Our prices were up to four times more than any other salon
  • I broke every rule pushed every boundary in the salon business
  • I rarely lost staff
  • I created brain-dead-simple systems that worked
  • I did something no other salon in the U.K. was doing
  • This was without social media
  • This was before the web
  • What I was doing any salon RIGHT NOW should be doing
  • My salon went from £30k a year to well over £400k

Yet … In the end I wasn't even working in my salon and it was doing better than ever.

The truth is, I didn’t have a clue what I was doing. I almost went bust big time more than once.

But after almost 20-years I had built a mini-empire in a small town that gave me a life any hair salon owner would have died for.

I managed to get off the shop floor. This gave me time to build a massive house and drop my kids off and pick them up from school daily.

I Have Written Down The Crazy Story To Show You Exactly How I Did It And How You Can Too!

 I want to say right now, I was no Toni & Guy. I had average everything at my salons until I discovered a few cool business tricks that transformed everything about my salon business.

I did my first haircut when I was 14-years old (1977). Started hairdressing in 1982. My first salon job in 1983. My first salon in 1989. I loved it, hated it, and despite the fact it almost shut down this is the remarkable story of how I managed to ...

I Grabbed The Number One Slot With My Salon In a Town of 35 Plus Hair Salons.

My first salon was just 250 sq. ft. in size. It started badly until I found out how to fix almost everything. Within 18-months I had gone from no clients and no staff to not having enough space and moving into a 2000 sq. ft salon.

Within another 18-months (and tons of problems) this new salon had gone from a standing start to being the only choice for restyle, colour and just about anything else in a town of 35 plus hair salons.

My Salon Was So Successful ...

  • I not only had far-too-many clients but I always had a huge list of staff waiting to move from other salons to mine.
  • I went from two staff to over 6 in no time.
  • If I am honest it wasn't easy but the hard work paid off.
  • I finally got off the shop floor and spent time building my own house and looking after my four kids.

And again if I am honest most of the time I didn't have a clue what I was doing but... I did find out there was definitely a method to my salon madness. 

That salon madness paid off

  • Clients loved my salon
  • Clients loved spending money in my salon
  • Reps loved what I was doing in my salons
  • Reps had never seen anything like what I was doing in my salon
  • The clients loved my salon so much they insisted on sending all of their friends
  • Every week became like a Christmas week
  • My salon made me the best paid salon owner with the biggest house

    I can’t make any great claims of taking over the hairdressing world or winning endless hairdressing awards. I never had fifty stylists breaking endless records and I never had a salon that turned over millions in pounds in haircuts or hairdressing services.

    Yet looking back at my 17-years as a salon owner I feel did do something pretty amazing in my own little world of hairdressing that you as a salon owner can look at and feel inspired by.

    Being a great hairdresser was and will never enough to create a successful hairdressing business. It just isn’t. Your great and successful salon business only arrives when you begin letting the public know you are a great hairdresser with a great salon. 

    A Great Salon Is About This

    It’s about knowing; managing, aiming, pushing, directing and marketing your salon in ways that could cost you nothing and give you everything. It’s also about finding and using systems that are actually proven to work and work fast in a salon just like yours.

    And I know that because I’ve done that for many salons as a mentor and also done that for my own salons between 1989 and 2003.

    I know for an absolute certainty that there are powerful things that must be done daily to make sure you have a hair salon business that is a success and that in turn gives you a much happier life.\For example creating a layered stack transformed my salon. All this is was a regular service layered up with high-value extras. This added massive value to every service.

    Happiness comes from doing the things in life you really feel the need to do. Your salon business either supports that or might actually be preventing that because of the lack of results.

    More Money ...

    If you are not making enough money or unable to cover your bills or pay your stylists or even unable to pay yourself – you’ll have a huge problem and that huge problem will make you unhappy with your life. A lack of money when you’re working hard can be a real killer. Yet it is fixable and can be fixed fast.

    Build a Real Salon Business

    I had to slowly and sometimes painfully learn the art of turning my salon into a real business. A business that could give me the kind of life I wanted. The life I wanted then was really a life built around a young family that needed to be fed, looked after and nourished. I had to create a business that would do just that. That’s exactly what I eventually did. I could not afford for it to fail. Failure for me really meant no food on the table that really was my personal bottom line.

    Eventual success in my salons gave me the ability to build my own stunning five-bedroomed converted barn on a farm, have around a one-acre plot of the garden with its own orchard and space for my kids to play around. And I have the time and money to be able to live a more enhanced life as a hairdresser.

    I made mistakes, plenty of them. Some mistakes were huge and almost cost me my salon and salons on more than one occasion. I will share those stories with you as you read along.

    I Discovered This

    Yet, after 17-years with my salons and the hairdressing business I discovered, learned, uncovered and found some of the most incredible ways to make sure not only did we all stay busy but the phone rang constantly, the appointment book was packed and we even had a long list of clients waiting for the last minute appointment. This was an incredible achievement for a school dropout, ex-landscape gardener and punk rocker to hit the top slot in a town of 35 very established salons.

    Anyway, be sure of this. Whatever you are going through in your salon right now is pretty normal. Even the salon stars of this world have troubles and issues that would leave you jaw-dropped in total disbelief if you knew them. I know, I’ve worked with some of these guys and seen it first hand in the biggest to the smallest of salons. It is normal. It is fixable and can be fixed faster than you will know right now.
